A somber chapter in American history unfolded at dawn on August 9, 1877. A surprise attack by US forces caught a peaceful camp of the nimí·pu· people (Nez Perce) off guard, sparking a bloody confrontation that would claim numerous lives. The aftermath left nearly 90 nimí·pu· and 31 soldiers and volunteers dead, forever changing the fate of those involved. Today, Big Hole National Battlefield stands as a poignant tribute to all who suffered during this fateful event.
