"Prior to the pioneering efforts of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, there was a significant gap in historical records documenting the lives and contributions of African Americans. However, thanks to his tireless advocacy, Dr. Woodson's home has become a vital piece of American heritage - now designated as a National Historic Site. From this very spot, Dr. Woodson spearheaded the Association for the Study of African American Life and History, introducing Negro History Week in 1926, which has since evolved into our current celebration of Black History Month."
